Surprising from coach Florian Kohfeldt at the Bundesliga club VfL Wolfsburg: On Sunday, the Lower Saxony completed the “mutual” separation from the 39-year-old, who and his team had a 2-2 against Meister Bayern Munich on Saturday.
Apparently, however, the club managers no longer had complete confidence in the work of the football teacher. On Saturday and Sunday, VfL managers around managing director Jörg Schmadtke and VfL Wolfsburgs director Marcel Schäfer came together for a season analysis.
Kohfeldt had only taken over the coaching post in Wolfsburg from the hapless Mark van Bommel in October 2021 and signed a contract with the wolves by summer 2023. The VfL was ninth in the league at the time and played in the group phase of the Champions League.
VfL Wolfsburg plays the weak season
On Saturday Wolfsburg ended the season in twelfth place. From the group phase of the premier class, the ambitious factory club had already said goodbye before Christmas and thus also missed the European League minimum goal.
Schmadtke and Schäfer had recently spoken of wanting to go into the new season with Kohfeldt.
The former Bremer Kohfeldt, who had spoken about the season planning after the game on Saturday against FC Bayern, canceled two longer-planned interview appointments “supposedly due to illness” on Sunday.
