Test: Lexus NX 450h E

As it looks: representative of how it should be for a product of Toyotas noble brand Lexus. It leads three crossover in the program, the NX takes the position of the sandwich child between the larger RX and the smaller UX. With a length of 4.66 meters, the NX models such as BMW X3, Mercedes GLC or Volvo XC60 selected as premium competitors. In its own home, the NX finds extensive technical equivalent in the Toyota Rav4, both brothers share the so-called GA-K platform.

The designers have managed to keep the mainstream away from the Midsize crossover without getting lost in too futuristic unsightly. The striking style element on the upright front is the voluminous diabolo cooler grill, which always reminded us a bit of Darth Vader.

How it is set up: The interior designers have also successfully held the middle between tailored and modernity. The cockpit layout does not look over (compared to the predecessor, says Lexus, the number of physical switches from 78 to 45 have been reduced) nor minimalist. Very nice: the large 14-inch touchscreen built-in with a brilliant imaging, appealingly clear graphic and intuitive menu navigation. Just as beautiful: the head-up display, which reflects their functional content when touching the two control panels in the steering wheel.

However, we are not quite friend with the digital interior mirror. The technicians have done everything to make his handling as easy as possible – the displayed image can be zoomed in and out as well as in brightness and tendency. Above all, the carriers of varifocals have to find the right perspective in order to perceive the back events in the offered sharpness. In addition, the glass is not mirror -free. After all: With the help of the drop-down lever, the digital display can be switched off. This must be mentioned because the high-tech mirror in the equipment variants Luxury Line and F-Sport is supplied as standard. He cannot even be booked with the simpler levels.

The processing quality is perfect, the seats are comfortably suitable for long -distance. And very quickly you get used to the comfort gain that the doors that open electromechanically at the push of a button. The “Safe Exit Assist” prevents unlocking if another road user approaches from behind.

The smartphone rests on an inductive loading area, it is integrated via Android Auto or – then also wireless – Apple CarPlay. Good: In addition to a USB-C socket, there is also a USB A standard, which saves the adapter. Two other USB-C connections are installed in the back.

How much space he has: . The head, legs and elbows get a commodity of freedom of movement on the front seats, a little more cramped is in the rear, but the vacation ride does not get to the ordeal at least on the two outdoor spaces. The luggage compartment absorbs reputable 545 to 1436 liters, the tailgate opens and closes (sensor -controlled) electrically, only in the basic model still has to be created. There is a storage compartment under the loading floor for the charging cables, which can be done out of the way.

What drives him: The NX is the first Lexus model with plug-in hybrid drive. View of the components: The combustion part takes over a 2.5 l four-cylinder suction petrol with 136 kW/185 hp. It cooperates with two electric motors: one steers from the direction of the front axle 134 kW/182 hp, the other, at the back, delivers 40 kW/54 hp and is crucial for all -wheel drive. As an alternative to the PHEV, Lexus offers the NX as a non-externally rechargeable full hybrid 350H with front or all-wheel drive.

How he drives: Cheritan engineering, the NX preserves the balance between sporty-tight and comfortable, only short cross-grooves strike through the occupants. The steering acts precisely, the brakes reliably grip energetically. And the drive has no trouble with the two tons of living weight of the Lexus, also because the electric engine in the rear is pushed, the NX does the standard sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in a quick 6.3 seconds, at 200 km/h The electronics are a final point.

What is particularly interested in a plug-in hybrid is, of course, (partial) electrical driving. By default, the NX is on EV mode, so purely electrically. This works up to a speed of 135 km/h. Even if the battery is empty, the combustion engine does not remain on its own. Because then the – also manually selected – hybrid program is activated, which alternates between driving with fuel and electricity and uses the electrical reserves that the NX gets by charging during the journey (recuperation). There is no special recuperation mode, but the engine brake can fix it using the switches.

Ecologically not sensible, but good if an environmental zone is waiting at the end of the journey or the neighbor should not be stained from sleep: the combustion engine can be used to load the battery. There is also the possibility to preserve the charging stand for later. And finally there is the Auto-EV/HV mode, which actually provides for purely electric driving, but with a higher performance requirement the hybrid program and thus all engines are temporarily switched on.

Furthermore, three driving modes called Eco, normal and sport are available, especially the F-Sport model with adaptive dampers spreads “Sport” in “Sports” and “Sport S+”.

Unfortunately, the good noise insulation in itself cannot completely prevent the typical soothing owed to the CVT transmission if accelerating the CVT gearbox.

How far it comes electrically: between 69 and 76 kilometers, says Lexus, in the city that increases to 89 to 98 kilometers. That is to be trusted. When a cautious journey, we actually managed 90 kilometers, a good 70 were reliably in it. This allows the NX to successfully bypass the plug-in bashing-if it is loaded disciplined and mostly used on the short distance, it remains a rare guest at the petrol station.

What he consumes: As long as the battery still had reserves, we came to 1.7 l/100 km fuel plus 11.5 kWh of electricity in hybrid mode. In the long term we noted 6.7 l and 18.7 kWh at the distance. If the battery is driven empty, an eight must be expected in the case of fuel consumption.

What we think: The Lexus NX 450H is a noble, well -processed crossover, which is moving at state -of -the -art levels with regard to the multimedia and available driving assistant. The plug-in hybrid drive convinces with confident performance, but above all thanks to the high electrical range and the relatively low consumption values. The CVT-typical whipping at high load is a weakness that you have to overlook.
