Formats: Space PC or Mini Calculator?

For PC enclosures, there are several standards that allow certain conclusions to the overall size. More specifically, these standards come about through the so-called form factors of motherboards. These are maximum dimensions that a motherboard may have to count to a specific standard.

The most important and relevant for normal users are form factors (from small to large) Mini-ITX, μatx (also MATX or Micro-ATX), ATX and E-ATX. So that an E-ATX motherboard fits into a housing, it must therefore have at least the necessary dimensions plus even a few centimeters more for drives, power supply and cable. In general, the motherboards always fit into a housing, which have the same form factor as the housing, but also smaller motherboards can be installed. Conversely, it does not work – an ATX motherboard does not fit into a housing that is specified only with Mini-ITX or μATX as a design. The outer dimensions resulting from the end can also overlap: there are ATX housings, which are smaller smaller than many a μATX housing.

Bitfenix Enso RGB Source: Bitfenix This can happen, for example, as follows: A μATX housing offers a lot of space for drives and cooling, and more space is also offered, for example, to radiators for water cooling in the ground or at the Mount the ceiling of the housing. Another case may have room for ATX motherboards, but is very compactly designed for a very compact and therefore less deeply and lower than the μATX housing. Of course you have to decide in general before buying which case size gives the most sense for you. We recommend an ATX housing. There are several models that are quite compact and barely larger than many μATX housings. The advantage of ATX is that you have more choice with the motherboards. Anyone who wants to grab μatx so that the housing is as small as possible, must in turn be careful not to come into problems later, as far as the space and ventilation are concerned. MINI-ITX should only buy yourself if you know how to make Gamer hardware sufficiently cooled in such a small case. Some one will perhaps look conversely a particularly large case and choose E-ATX. From our point of view, however, this is not necessary, as well as compact ATX housing thanks to modern graphics card and CPU coolers now enable excellent cooling. The times in which strong gamer hardware needed a lot of space so that there is enough air and fans, have been over for some time. E-ATX is only useful for extreme situations or for PCs, in which, for example, one wants to install an Armada on hard drives, or even for users who reliant on a professional motherboard from the server area, often the E-ATX format to have.
